The Julian Alps has a number of ice falls of varying length and degree of difficulty. These are of interest to beginner and expert alike. The ice falls normally start to form around end of November. The best ice fall climbing months being between December and February. Sometime first half of March. Access is easy, with 1 – 2 hours walk from the road.
Skill grade: Ice climbing between WI 3 – WI 6
Participants should have completed at least 1 multi-day tour or at least some day tours and be familiar with the technical aspects of ice climbing.
You need to be a competent with technique of ice climbing.
Equally important is fitness. On most days you will be ascending from 1h – 2h hours and climbing 5 – 6h descent 1h, which requires excellent physical stamina. You are advised to prepare yourself well in advance by regular hill walking and ideally some ice climbing.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Travel to Kranjska Gora from Ljubljana airport.
Day 2-5: Ice climbing in some of the most beautiful Slovenian mountain valleys, such as Tamar, Vrsic, Trenta. Decisions will be made considering weather and ice conditions.
Day 6-7: Possible routes in higher Slovenian mountains, conditions permiting. For example, the north face of Mount Triglav, Slovenian highest mountain (2,864m), the north face of Mount Prisank (2,547m), Mala Mojstrovka etc.
Day 8: Dispersal. Breakfast will be provided on the last morning before leaving the course.

Your Guides:
Our 2010 trips will be led by Klemen Gricar and Tomas Jakofcic. Klemen and Tomas are both UIAGM Slovenian mountain guides. If is necessary, trip will be assisted by other UIAGM Mountain Guides.
Equipment
Harness, ice-axes and ice crampons, helmet, ice screws, screw carbines, mountaineering boots compactable with crampons, winter clothes, gloves.
Accomodation and meal
In Kranjska Gora you will stay on halfboard in the Pri Martinu Inn, a small traditional Slovenian hotel & restaurant which serves excellent Slovenian specialities.

Travel and visa:
Fly with Easyjet from Stansted to Ljubjlana (1¾ hr flight). From the airport in Ljubjlana it is an 50 minute transfer by minibus to the hotel in Kranjska Gora. The return journey will be via the same route.
